British Columbia has become the sixth province in Canada to provide free access to Mifegymiso, a safe abortion pill used to terminate pregnancy in the first nine weeks.
With the province covering the price of the pill - which can run over $300 - more women in British Columbia will be able to access this abortion option and make an informed choice for their reproductive future.
Under this new rule, women will be able to receive Mifegymiso, the brand name for a combination of mifepristone and misoprostol, from a pharmacist up to 63 days into a pregnancy. The pill can be administered safely, at the women’s home, without the supervision of a physician.
In a statement, the Ministry of Health said, “Removing the cost barrier helps ensure that individuals can access this safe, legal and available option if they choose.”
Within the past year, New Brunswick, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec and Nova Scotia have also made Mifegymiso free and reduced barriers to access a safe abortion with pills.
