A new study offers reassuring evidence about using misoprostol alone for self-induced abortion.
Abortion with pills usually involves the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. However, it's not always easy to get both. Now a new study offers reassuring evidence about using misoprostol alone for self-induced abortion. That's great news, especially for the millions of women around the world who have limited access to health clinics.
The study followed 220 women in Peru who were evaluated by nurses, then sent home with misoprostol and detailed instructions on how to use it. The results show that misoprostol alone is effective and safe to use at home: 89 percent of the women successfully completed their abortion, while only two women — less than 1 percent — had complications that required further medical attention.
