A recent study has found that for individuals facing an unintended pregnancy, many are relying on the Internet for information about self-managed abortion. The authors of the study found that in one month there were more than 200,000 Google searches for information related to self-managed abortion. Among those surveyed, 62% reported that they were pregnant and did not want to be, and 80% of them were younger than 25. Around two thirds of respondents lived in the South or Midwest – areas where many states have abortion restrictions. In addition, about one third of respondents did not know whether abortion was legal in their state.
The findings of this study indicate that individuals are interested in learning more about self-managed abortion from the Internet. However, while the Internet is a valuable resource, it can also be a source of misinformation. In the study, when respondents were asked whether they had taken something to try on their own to end an unwanted pregnancy, 55% reported using herbs and vitamins. With more individuals using the Internet as a resource, it is vital to ensure that individuals access websites and resources with accurate information about how to terminate a pregnancy effectively and legally.
Luckily there has been a rise in the number of websites and organizations increasing access to information about abortion, and self-managed abortion with abortion pills. These websites not only provide information about what a medical abortion is, but they also include evidence on the effectiveness of medical abortion, as well as FAQs on how to use the pill, and what to expect after using the abortion pill. Apart from Women Help Women, useful websites include howtouseabortionpill.org and Women on Waves. There are also numerous hotlines and regional sources for both abortion, and family planning resources.
